The longer you use your computer, the more data you put inside it. This in turn will have its setback of slowing down your system’s processes. A computer can be compared to a hiker. When the hiker has its normal load, he climbs the mountain in his optimal speed. But if you load up the hiker’s gear again and again, he will slow down eventually. Same way with the computer which is why cleaning it up is a must.

Now there are two possible options in boosting the computer’s performance. One is maintenance, the other is upgrading.

Maintenance can be done either by manually checking the registry and cleaning it or by using software to do the job for you. Getting software for the job is pretty much self-explanatory so I will dwell to the manual method. Open Start Menu, click Run, and then type in ‘regedit’. This will open up a window that is called the Registry Editor. This is where all data connected to your operating system is stored. If the data here are deleted, the affected software will malfunction and won’t function anymore. This is a very vital part of Windows. In the event that you delete important files from your system, you may have to reformat your PC. If you are inexperienced with this type of action, use software instead.

Upgrading is replacing some parts of your computer to make it perform faster. You can upgrade some parts of your unit but not your hard drive. Your hard disk drive contains all data, even your operating system. So, replacing it means starting all over from scratch. Replace your RAM, your processor, your motherboard, and video card. That shall do the trick.

Boosting your computer’s performance is easy. It is all but a matter of your decision whether to upgrade or to maintain. The best way though is by intertwining both methods.

The registry is a very important feature of each computer that operates on Microsoft operating systems. Now, let’s take a closer look at the structure of the registry. Basically, the registry has four up to six subfolders which are also termed as sub-trees. These sub-trees are expandable and can be found on the left pane when the registry editor is opened. Once the subfolders are expanded, it will be possible to locate different keys and sub keys, which can also be expanded to view other keys.

Observe these few points below:

•	(HKCC) HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG – This folder contains all the configuration settings related to your hardware.

•	(HKCR) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT – In this root key, COM, OLE, and file object data are stored.

•	(HKCU) HKEY_CURRENT_USER – The profile of the current user using the computer is contained in this root key.

•	(HKU) HKEY_USERS – Everyone who turns the computer on and logs in have their default profiles saved here.

•	(HKLM) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE – This root folder encompasses different configuration settings that are connected to the hardware, applications, and the operating system currently in use.

•	(HKDD) HKEY_DYN_DATA – This folder has gone obsolete after Windows ME. Anyway, this is a folder that is in Windows 95, 98, or ME. This is attached to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE that contains basic functions of Plug & Play. Additionally, it changes automatically when more devices are added onto the computer’s system.

These subfolders play a vital role in the registry as these keep it organized, making keys and sub keys easier to find in fixing and cleaning registry errors. Now, knowing what these subfolders are, their means of access, and their functions, it will be a lot easier to determine why a clean registry is vital for the best performance of a computer. A cleaner registry will definitely result to a better performing computer.

The windows registry contains all settings for Windows OS and your installed applications. By editing the registry you can: make your computer boot faster, allow computer to automatically logon to your desktop, and enable faster buffering of online media, among many others. Through your registry you can also discover if you have malware and virus on your computer. For those who install trial software, a little edit of the registry will allow the user to take advantage of the software indefinitely.

Through there are a lot of advantages in editing the registry, keep in mind that this is an integral part of Windows and can lead to computer crash if edited incorrectly. Before you do any change, make sure you backup your registry so you can restore in case you make a mistake. This way, you won’t have to reinstall your operating system but you may still loss some of your personal data in the process.

If a computer is shared by multiply people, you might want to disable the registry so as to protect the system. If you are using Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003 or 2008, this is now possible.

To disable the registry editor, you need to be logged in as administrator of your computer. Here are 4 ways you can disable the registry editor:

1. Disable registry access to the user currently logged on:

a. Click on start>run then type in regedit (For Vista and Win7 users, just type in regedit to the search bar on the start menu) . Hit OK.
b. Look for the following entry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
c. Right click on the empty space, choose new>key. Name it System.
d. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System choose new>DWORD Value and name this DisableRegistryTools (without spaces in between).
e. Finally, change the value data to 1 to disable the registry editor.

2. Disable access for all user accounts

Follow steps a to 3 above but replace HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies to HKEY_CURRENT_USER to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

3. Using the group editor

a. You’ll need to download this software from microsoft. There are 3 files available on this site, choose the right file depending on your operating system (2000admsetup.msi is for MS 2000, and so on).
b. Once you’ve downloaded and installed the file, you must run it. To do that go to Run and type in gpedit.msc. This should open to the local group policy editor and will allow you prevent access to the registry tools.
c. Look for User configuration>administrative templates>system.
d. Double click on the folder and a new window should appear. Choose the disabled option.

4. Through a virus

Several viruses may disable access to your registry editor. A malware known us the W32/Brontok-C is known to cause this. Unfortunately, it will also disable your access to the registry editor and the malware can cause the computer to crash. Needless to say, this last step is undesirable since you will not be able to control the spread of the malware and it will actually install new application without prompting you.
