Data loss can be a very drastic experience for computer users. Sometimes, the data is just too vital to let go. Sometimes, the data is something you need at the moment. But since those data are gone, you have no option but to start all over again.

Preventing this is always possible. The key to avoiding data loss is creating backups. If you have a lot of data, especially essential data, back it up. Creating backups avoid the grave consequences you can get from data loss.

There is a lot of ways that you can backup your files:

•	Hardware Backup

This is the usual option for people in backing up data. Get a data storage device, be it an external drive, a USB, a reserve hard disk drive, a compact disk, a DVD, or whatever. All of this can help you in avoiding data loss. Connect the data storage device to your system. After doing so, select all the data you think you need. Emphasis on the word ‘need’ there. In backing up your data, it is important that you prioritize vital files over what you want to save. Once you have copied these files into your storage device, a USB for example, remove the device properly. Again, emphasis on the word ‘properly’. Learn that removing the device improperly may corrupt the data and even your device. Store your device away in a safe place. If ever you have new files to backup, access the device again and repeat the process.

•	Online Backup

This is a new trend in getting backup data. One ingenious way of doing online backup is by using emails. You can attach files to your email, right? You can do the same. Attach files and save as a draft. Come the event that you need the file, simply download it.

Particularly in businesses, not all data is meant to be shared. Some data, when shared and exploited, may even bankrupt one company. This is why securing data is so important nowadays. Here are a few ways how you can protect your data:

• Safeguard Software – You can protect your data through installing effective software that disable the capability of distributing data to other parties through underground programs. This can come in the form of antivirus, filters, and/or firewalls. When tis type of software is installed in your system, information can no longer be sent without your consent. However, constant update is required to stay effective.
• USB Blocks – There are metal plates that prevent computer users from inserting USB flash drives to a system, disabling copying of files to other data storage devices.
• Privacy Screens – Though this method may be simple, it is rather effective in blocking snoopers and/or passersby who look at your screen. You cannot be sure if the data you input is safe as some identity thief can be around looking from behind you. Privacy screens, however, only allow vision to the person in front of the unit, securing you and your data especially in public places.
• Biometric Measures – Now if you are really serious in storing your data away from other people, this is the best method to use. Biometrics are very hard, if not impossible, to hack. You will have to use the same iris or the same thumbprint as the user has inputted in the computer. You can program the computer to shut itself down when the fingerprint is not yours, preventing from any data theft.

If these methods still fail, then prohibit data reproduction/copying. You can do this by putting up USB blocks and/or removing CD drives. Along with this, make sure you uninstall data transfer software such as CD/DVD burning software.

Creating partitions in hard disk drives is a very common practice which sometimes seems to be like a tradition. However, it is very purposeful as it divides storage space. This opens up new doors such as installing multiple operating systems; running Windows 7 on drive C and Linux Ubuntu in drive D. But, even partitions are not exempted from breaking. Sometimes, the partition gets corrupted and can be blamed for various reasons, such as:

Malfunctions caused by the operating system

File system corruption

Resizing of the partitions

Virus infiltration

The data is then rendered inaccessible. However, it is still possible to fix it. Here’s an example scene:

You tried out new software that resizes the partition. During the resizing process, the power went out. After that, the unit shuts down with the blue screen accompanied with an error message like a problem has been detected, telling that the computer shut down Windows to prevent more damage.

The system fails to boot up, rendering your data inaccessible. The scenario above can be explained as an internal problem with Windows because the partition is being resized by a third-party and it is stopped in the middle of the process. This is how you solve such problems:

During your computer’s boot-up, press F8. This will direct you to Windows’s advanced menu.

Highlight “Last Known Good Configuration” (this is the last time that your operating system has worked well) then press ENTER button.

Disable antivirus program/s and/or backup tools then boot from the installer disk.

Use the command CHKDSK to inspect the error and if possible, repair it.

When this method does not work, you will have to reformat your computer and remake the partitions, deleting all data you had stored. If reformatting is not an option for you, due to important documents or such, then use Partition Recovery software that can help in saving your hard drive.

Many people still fail to understand the purpose of backup data. But more importantly, there are more people who do not understand how to do so. But this is the article that will explain it all to you.

All the data in your computer is stored in one component of the CPU, which is commonly known as hard drive (aka hard disk drive or HDD). The HDD not only stores your personal documents and files but also your software programs and operating system/s; meaning that once your HDD gets corrupted or breaks down, it’s the dead end.

Years way back, one big problem is the “mechanical failure” of HDDs. But as technology developed more, mechanically troublesome hard disks lessened and the cases of broken HDDs have reduced in number. Still, the threat remains.

Data recovery may be an option, but it does not work all the time. When your operating system fails and/or software has been either installed or uninstalled improperly, it may corrupt some files that can no longer be retrieved. This is where backup data becomes important, for you to realize that not all data can be restored.

You have two options in creating backup data:

External Hardware – External hard drive has gone very cheap nowadays. Getting one would not be much of a hassle. Plus, if you really are very careful with your stuff, it can last very long. Using this type of backup, you’ll just have to copy files from your computer to this drive (especially important documents/software). But, you must remember that you have to copy files from time to time.

Software Option – There are already cheap software that allows you not only to backup your system, but to even let you create versions of it, edit it, and compress it. Encryption is also possible. This is the other viable option for creating backup data.

Do you like computer gaming? Do you have the “right” computer for the job? If not, do not be hesitant on assembling a gaming computer. It does not always have to be costly. You can always acquire a computer that is fast enough for your games yet have the perfect value for your money. Read on and consider these tips.

Primarily, a gaming PC requires some of the best components, if not the best, for your computer. Hardware knowledge is very much necessary in this part. Familiarize yourself with the important parts you need such as RAM, hard drive, motherboard, processor, video card, and sound card. For better gaming experience, you may also opt to invest in better speakers, sound card, gaming monitor, keyboard, and mouse. If you can play for more than 6 hours straight, then you might as well consider another CPU cooler to take care of your hardware as computers heat up more quickly during gaming.

Now, it’s about time to canvass for materials. Local PC shops offer these components. Of course there are brand new and secondhand items. You better opt for secondhand as these come cheaper and the quality is still good. However, if you have some more cash to spend plus the desire for optimal gaming, get brand new items. But remember that technology advances rapidly, meaning there’s always something new and something better.

You don’t just get a gaming PC when you assemble one. You also save up some cash. Come the time that you want to upgrade your computer because of newer better components or because of games that demand better hardware, you may opt to sell parts that you will upgrade then purchase newer and better ones. Also, always check the internet about information on parts of gaming computer hardware and such.

Did you know you can share a single internet connection just by using your computer? Yes, I meant you don’t need a router or hub to do this! This is the technology called as Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and it’s been around since Windows 98 SE.

For this tutorial, we will be setting up ICS in Windows XP because it is much easier to setup since the necessary network components or protocols are already installed. Also, most computer networkers believe that the XP edition of ICS is more and less likely to cause network issues.

Preparing for Internet Connection Sharing

In order to use ICS, the host computer (the one connected to the internet) must have 2 network adapters. One of them must be configured for the internal network (Local Area Network or LAN) and the other must be connected to the internet. Internet connection may use DSL or cable, and the LAN connection may be wired, wireless or it may even use USB-Ethernet connection.

Before you start configuring ICS,:

Make sure that your host computer can connect to the internet (just test it by launching a browser and visit several sites)

You have to decide if your client computers (the ones connecting to the host computer) can control the server’s internet connection through the internet gateway.

Here are the steps you should follow to enable ICS on the host computer:

Logon to the computer as the Administrator or Owner.

Go to the control panel. To do this click on Start>Control Panel.

If you are using the category view, you should see Network and Internet Connections. Click that and go to Network Connections.

If you are in the classic view, double click on Network Connections.

Right click on the connection you are using to connect to the internet. For example, if you are using a broadband connection, right click the connection under LAN or High Speed Internet.

Click on properties and then go to the advanced tab.

Under internet connection sharing, make sure you put a mark on allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection.

Once you click ok the you will receive a message which states:

When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, your LAN adapter will be set to use IP
address 192.168.0.1. Your computer may lose connectivity with other computers on
your network. If these other computers have static IP addresses, it is a good idea to set them
to obtain their IP addresses automatically. Are you sure you want to enable Internet
Connection Sharing?

Click yes.

If your host computer is connected to a router or a hub, you will receive this message: . In this case, make sure that your computer is not connecting through wireless or that there are no other networking device in the setup.

Now let’s setup the connection on the client computers. Follow these steps.

Logon to the computer as Administrator or Owner.

Follow steps 2 to 5 above.

On the general tab, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click on Properties

Make sure that that the computer is set to obtain IP address automatically.

If you are going to use more than 1 client computer, it would help to set your IP addresses. You can use the following setting for one computer. Use the same subnet mask and default gateway for all client computers but make sure you change the IP address from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.3 and so on.

Close all windows.

Follow steps 1-3 above but this time, instead of choosing network connections, select internet options.

Click on the connections tab and hit the setup button. A wizard should appear and you are now ready to make a new connection.

Click next on the new connection wizard.

Choose connect to the internet and hit next.

Choose Setup my connection manually and click next again

Click connect using a broadband connection that is always on and then hit next.

Click finish to complete the connection.

That’s it. Keep in mind, however, that this connection can only be used with Internet Explorer. Also, if you are connecting VPN on your host computer, your client computers won’t be able to access the internet. Lastly, if your host computer is member of another network, make sure that there are no other computers on that network addressed 192.168.0.1 or else your host computer as well as your client computers will not be able to connect to the internet.
