How to Backup Your Computer Data

by admin on July 27, 2010

Many people still fail to understand the purpose of backup data. But more importantly, there are more people who do not understand how to do so. But this is the article that will explain it all to you.

All the data in your computer is stored in one component of the CPU, which is commonly known as hard drive (aka hard disk drive or HDD). The HDD not only stores your personal documents and files but also your software programs and operating system/s; meaning that once your HDD gets corrupted or breaks down, it’s the dead end.

Years way back, one big problem is the “mechanical failure” of HDDs. But as technology developed more, mechanically troublesome hard disks lessened and the cases of broken HDDs have reduced in number. Still, the threat remains.

Data recovery may be an option, but it does not work all the time. When your operating system fails and/or software has been either installed or uninstalled improperly, it may corrupt some files that can no longer be retrieved. This is where backup data becomes important, for you to realize that not all data can be restored.

You have two options in creating backup data:

  1. External Hardware – External hard drive has gone very cheap nowadays. Getting one would not be much of a hassle. Plus, if you really are very careful with your stuff, it can last very long. Using this type of backup, you’ll just have to copy files from your computer to this drive (especially important documents/software). But, you must remember that you have to copy files from time to time.
  2. Software Option – There are already cheap software that allows you not only to backup your system, but to even let you create versions of it, edit it, and compress it. Encryption is also possible. This is the other viable option for creating backup data.
